Mastectomy Surgery
One type of surgery a breast reconstruction doctor performs is a mastectomy surgery. There are two common types of mastectomy surgery a cosmetic surgeon does: simple mastectomy and radical mastectomy.
What is Mastectomy Surgery?
A breast reconstruction doctor performs a
mastectomy surgery to remove cancer in a breast. Sometimes, a cosmetic surgeon removes part of a breast, and sometimes the entire breast. A breast reconstruction doctor will even remove both breasts if he has to. The amount of breast removed during a mastectomy surgery depends on the type surgery the breast reconstruction doctor is performing.
Types of Mastectomy Surgery
Because breast cancer can be complex, there are a number of types of mastectomy surgery a cosmetic surgeon can do to counter it. Two types of mastectomy surgery are:
- Simple Mastectomy - During this surgery, the breast reconstruction doctor removes all of the breast tissue Sometimes a simple mastectomy is done on both breasts.
- Radical Mastectomy - During this surgery, the cosmetic surgeon removes the entire breast. A radical mastectomy was first done in 1882. It removes both the minor and major muscles behind the breast.
Sometimes mastectomy surgery is done not only to remove breast cancer, but to prevent breast cancer. After a mastectomy surgery, especially a radical mastectomy, some get breast implants from a breast reconstruction doctor to improve their appearance.
